This coffee comes from trees grown by 2000 or more smallholder farmers as well as trees from Buf Café. Buf Café is hand-picked and hand sorted, then fully washed and dried in traditional African raised beds.
Buf Café is owned and operated by Epiphanie Mukashyaka who was widowed during the 1994 genocide. Instead of abandoning her family’s small coffee farm she chose to rebuild in 2003 with a loan from the Rwandan Development Bank and the assistance of the USAID-financed PEARL project.
Today Buf Café owns two coffee washing stations and the workers are paid well above the average local wage which has resulted in a high level of quality control. Buf Café has even had several winning lots in the Cup of Excellence.
